Arachne Wall Generator in OrcaSlicer: When Variable Line Widths Help

Understand Arachne, variable line widths, thin walls and where Classic walls may still be preferable.

Arachne changes how a slicer decides where perimeter lines should fit. Instead of treating every extrusion line as a fixed width, it can vary line width within limits to better match the model geometry.

Why fixed-width walls create compromises

If a thin feature does not divide neatly into the selected line width, a fixed strategy may leave a gap, drop the feature or add awkward gap fill. Arachne can redistribute widths so the available space is filled more naturally.

Where Arachne helps

  • thin walls and ribs,
  • small text and details,
  • curved shells with changing thickness,
  • areas where Classic creates many tiny gap-fill moves.

Variable width is not magic

The nozzle and material still have physical limits. Extremely narrow or wide lines can reduce consistency, and dimensional behavior can differ from a fixed-wall strategy. Always inspect the preview on functional parts.

Arachne vs. Classic

Classic can still be useful when you want predictable fixed line placement or when a particular model slices more cleanly that way. The better choice is the one that gives the intended geometry, not the one with the newer name.

Check wall order and seam placement too

Surface quality is a combination of wall generator, wall order, seam, pressure behavior and cooling. If a part has visible bumps, do not assume Arachne alone is responsible.

Practical workflow

  1. Slice with Arachne.
  2. Inspect line-width preview around thin features.
  3. Compare Classic on the same model.
  4. Check dimensions on critical regions.
  5. Print a representative section before committing to a long job.
