Illustration for Stringing

Stringing is not only a retraction problem. Moisture, nozzle temperature, travel behavior, wipe settings and pressure inside the hotend can all contribute.

How do you recognize it?

  • Threads between towers or separate features
  • More visible on long travels
  • Often worse with wet PETG, TPU or nylon

Common causes

  • Moist filament
  • Nozzle too hot
  • Retraction not matched to the system
  • Slow or inefficient travel paths
  • Residual melt pressure

What should you check first?

  1. Check filament condition first.
  2. Test temperature under realistic flow.
  3. Calibrate retraction after moisture and temperature.
  4. Use wipe/travel tuning as the final step.
