Adaptive Layer Height

Variable layer height within one model: finer on detailed slopes, coarser where geometry is less sensitive.

Illustration for Adaptive Layer Height

Adaptive Layer Height changes layer thickness along the Z axis based on model geometry. The goal is to reduce visible stepping on curves and shallow slopes without printing the entire model at a very small layer height.

How do you recognize it?

  • Finer layers on curves and shallow slopes
  • Coarser layers on vertical or less critical regions
  • Changing layer heights visible in slicer preview

Common causes

  • Local optimization of quality versus print time

What should you check first?

  1. Inspect transitions in preview.
  2. Limit min/max layer height to realistic values for the nozzle.
  3. Consider the effect on layer count and surface consistency in critical regions.
